Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it in 2026?
New prices from October 2026, the Nozomi supplement, and a quick way to work out whether a pass beats single tickets for your route.
The nationwide Japan Rail Pass gives unlimited travel on JR trains for 7, 14 or 21 days. It used to be an automatic buy. After a big price rise in 2023 and another increase in October 2026, it now only pays off for long, busy itineraries.
2026 prices
| Pass | Adult | Child (6–11) |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary, 7 days | ¥53,000 | ¥27,000 |
| Ordinary, 14 days | ¥84,000 | ¥42,000 |
| Ordinary, 21 days | ¥105,000 | ¥53,000 |
| Green Car, 7 days | ¥74,000 | ¥37,000 |

| Green Car, 21 days | ¥147,000 | ¥74,000 |
These prices apply from 1 October 2026. The official site has said it will offer old prices for a limited time on some bookings, so check there before buying.
Nozomi and Mizuho trains
The fastest trains on the Tokyo–Osaka–Fukuoka line, Nozomi and Mizuho, are not fully covered. Pass holders can ride them by buying a supplement ticket at a station machine or ticket office. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka or Kyoto costs ¥4,960 extra each way. The slightly slower Hikari trains are fully covered.
Quick test: does it pay off?
Add up the single fares for your planned JR trips within 7 days. If the total is well over ¥53,000, the pass saves money.
| Example 7-day route | Single tickets (approx.) | Pass worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Tokyo | about ¥28,000 | No |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo | about ¥50,000+ | About even |
| Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Fukuoka → Tokyo | well over ¥60,000 | Yes |
Cheaper alternatives
- Regional JR passes cover one area, such as Kansai or East Japan, for much less.
- Single shinkansen tickets booked online, sometimes with early-booking discounts.
- Domestic flights can beat the train for Tokyo to Fukuoka, Sapporo or Okinawa.
- City day passes such as the Tokyo Subway Ticket, which the JR Pass does not replace.
